Thin-Film Composite Polyamide Membranes Decorated with Photoactive Carbon Dots for Antimicrobial Applications
Principal Investigator: Dr. Andreia Fonseca de Faria
Department: Environmental Engineering Sciences
Institution: University of Florida
Personal Research Affiliation: August 2022 - December 2022
Research Focus: My research focus of the project was to study the decomposition of biomass and use of nanomaterials as alternative water filtrations.
Project Responsibilities: While working under Dr. Faria, I experimented with a nanomaterial called carbon dots and saw their effects on gram positive and gram negative bacteria's' production of biofilm. I helped grow bacteria cultures and then used dyes to stain the bacteria's cell membrane. Once the carbon dots were placed with the bacteria through a pipette, time was given to see the effect, and then I aided with the spectrophotometer readings to record the leaked dye concentration for each sample.
